The name pumpkin comes from the
Greek word ‘pepon’, meaning ‘large melon’.They are a member of the
Cucurbita family which includes squash and cucumbers. Pumpkins are round, with smooth, slightly ribbed skin and
deep yellow to orange coloration and
they have thick shells which contain pulp and seeds. Pumpkins are usually
orange but can sometimes be yellow, white, green or red. Pumpkins contain
potassium and Vitamin A and have flowers that are edible. They are very versatile in their uses for cooking.
Most parts of the pumpkin are edible, including the fleshy shell, the
seeds, the leaves, and even the flowers. When ripe, the pumpkin can be boiled,
baked, steamed, or roasted. Pumpkins have thick shells
which contain pulp and seeds.
